Smith Co., the firm’s legacy of service stretches across generations and industries, setting the stage for what would become CAC Group.

Birmingham

  • 1887-1945

    A historical foundation

    In 1887, John G. Smith Co. was established in Birmingham, Alabama to serve the state’s growing insurance needs. In the early 1900s, three Birmingham businessmen, John H. Cobbs, Wilbur K. Allen and John C. Hall, joined the company. The firm was renamed Cobbs, Allen & Hall to reflect its new leadership.

  • 1945-1970

    Diversification and Regional Growth

    Cobbs, Allen & Hall expanded its services to include mortgages and broadened its commercial and private insurance reach across the Southeast. In 1970, the firm exited the mortgage space to sharpen its focus on insurance and financial services.

  • 1970-1992

    A Leadership Transition

    In 1992, Birmingham native Grantland Rice III and a group of investors acquired the firm, bringing in Bruce Denson as Chairman and CEO to usher in a new era of direction and expansion.

  • 1993-2019

    Strategic Expansion in the Southeast

    With renewed leadership, Cobbs Allen expanded operations across the Southeast and diversified into commercial insurance, benefits, and personal lines. The firm has earned a strong reputation for its commitment to clients and local communities.

  • 2019-2022

    Innovation and Investment

    Amid industry disruption, Cobbs Allen launched CAC Specialty, a forward-looking platform backed by elite talent from across the insurance brokerage world. This venture laid the groundwork for what would become CAC Group.
